The Feeling

Feeling: an emotional state or reaction.

“Can you feel it?”

“Hmmm. There’s a warm, kinda tingling sensation.”

“Jase, check the azimuth!”

“On it, one sec,” head bobbing down behind a bank of monitors.

“Okay, look. Try this,” tapping his fingertips with the screwdriver.

“Hmmm? Still nothing?”

“It’s… I don’t know. It’s been so long. I don’t know what I’m feeling for.”

“What do you mean,” looking up, puzzled. “It’s just another arm. No different to the one you had two years ago. You can’t have forgotten, surely?”

“I dunno, man. It’s weird. You wouldn’t understand.”

“Apparently not. I mean, I can’t imagine what it must have been like going through what you’ve been through. But I’d have thought…”

“Well, I don’t. Think that is. Maybe you shouldn’t either. There’s only so much a person can deal with.”

“But still, it’s your arm.”

“No, my arm’s long gone.”

“Don’t be like that, this one’s just as good. Better, even.”

“No, no. You’re wrong. It’s not the same. It could never be the same.”
